Independence Day 2018 at G.D. Somani Memorial School

India celebrated her 72nd Independence Day last month. Across the country, school children were at the heart of this celebration, whether hoisting the flag at school or participating in a number of cultural activities – it is a day to acknowledge, remember, celebrate and commemorate the immense privilege given by our freedom fighters, that is our right to freedom. A hard won right that came on the back of a long and arduous fight of over 200 years, with numerous sacrifices and life-changing events that shaped the history of the country.

It is a day to bring to memory all the freedom fighters, martyrs, great thinkers and intellectuals who influenced change in one way or another, transforming and tightening the social and political fabric of our nation and this is most commonly done with a series of cultural activities: by enacting the lives of revolutionaries, or telling tales of landmark events in our freedom struggle, or remembering the important milestones that have brought us this far.

Independence Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the diverse and plural nature of India’s cultural landscape. Through song, dance, theatre and various folk arts traditions, diversity of food, displaying the variety of costumes, the younger generation is inspired to be true citizens of the future and love their country.

Here are some moments from our celebrations at GD Somani Memorial School this year.
